Oerestad North: a welcoming entrance

parking and accessibility

The square at Islands Brygge Metro Station functions as a welcoming and visible entrance to the north of Ørestaden. A number of practical features such as bicycle parking and accessibility is incorporated in the project, but first and foremost it has a clear signal value and bids pedestrians and cyclists welcome to Ørestaden.

The main design element is a staircase that unfolds over the edge of a large basin. The staircase functions partly as seating and partly as a frisky landmark for the entrance to Ørestaden. The staircase allows you to sit briefly or for a long time, splashing in the water, sitting with your face or back to the sun. A part of the staircase unfolds in water which surface is broken by gurgling water jets. The staircase edge lights up at night, and frame the steps as a graphic element in the room.
